Being British is a chance to decide who you are

"If you are British it doesn't matter who you are, what colour you are, if you are British you're given a chance in life to be honest with yourself. It's up to you whether you take a chance, but everyone is given a chance"

What they get from mainstream TV

With the exception of sport, mainstream TV is a poor reflection of their world. Young mixed race Britain’s show a determination to find channels and programmes that either enhance their youthfulness or enhance their ethnicity

What they get from Ethnic TV

Specific channels such as Channel U, seem to communicate with them on a better level. It better understands their lives and their needs

A way of communicating with others, without prejudice.

As well as being a great tool for finding out about and connecting with their heritage, the internet provides a safe, non judgemental environment to meet and network with peers.

"Gives you a stronger sense of understanding who you are and to be proud of who you are, because sometimes you're put down"

These were the only respondents that truly cared about what a brand stands for, what it says about itself and the impact on society
Youth culture

"I love Diesel and Fornarina for clothing brands as I think they are different and suitable for younger adults"

Individuality

"I tend to go for obscure brands that no-one has heard of.
However it must be at affordable prices. Being a uni student and soooo broke, shops like Oxfam have become a new found friend"

Brands that have a point of view

“Virgin because of their green policy, Co-op because of their social policy and Gina because I love their glamorous shoes”

"Black history month on MTV base is good cause you get to watch stuff about black culture, they show all the black history icons"

Little parental influence on what they watch

While mixed race respondents are keen to pursue their own path, they do have a real desire to learn more about their ethnic roots and heritage and therefore have a shared TV on occasion with at least one of their parents

Channel 4 programming not for them

Although they appreciate channel 4’s varied programming, its felt not to be geared towards them. It does not speak to them in the same way as channel U or Trouble

Channel 4’s programming does not focus on their primary interests of sport, comedy and music

“A lot of the time channel 4 have one really good show and it’ll go dead for a while - so it wont be constant entertainment all the time, I just watch it every now and again”
